San Francisco Giants pitcher Juan Marichal

The Greatest Game Ever Pitched

Juan Marichal dueled Warren Spahn, the 42-year-old Milwaukee Braves' future Hall of Fame pitcher, in a night contest on July 2, 1963, at Candlestick Park. The two great pitchers matched scoreless innings until Willie Mays homered off Spahn to win the game, 1–0, in the 16th inning. Both Spahn and Marichal tossed 15-plus inning complete games, something that had not happened before or since in the big leagues.

Ode To An Opponent
Sung to:  I love Paris in the springtime. (Cole Porter)

I hate Dallas in the springtime.
I hate Dallas in the fall.
I hate Dallas in the winter when it drizzles,

Oh Heck!
I Just hate Dallas all the time.
The Warriors will destroy them! (not Cole Porter).

We Want Larry!
Now that Larry Krueger is no longer on KNBR, is there any chance he might like to use Sports Today as a way to keep his sports groove sharp?

It's not healthy to bottle up that Krueger energy, and he could have a lot of fun with the variety of articles and novelties Sports Today has to offer -- Haikus, team picks, stories, team action -- all of it!

WE WANT LARRY! WE WANT LARRY!

Frank Gore: Professional Boxer and 49er Rookie's Role Model KO's Opponent
Former San Francisco 49ers running back and potential Hall of Famer Frank Gore defeated Yaya Olorunsola with a brutal fourth-round knockout on Saturday. A lot of linebackers have Gore's cleat marks on their backs.

Are there any other Gore-like, no-nonsense role models for the new 49er recruits? How about a film session of Donte W'Hit'ner as an "impactful" player; Merton Hanks, the Goose-necked ball hawk; Ronnie Lott ('Nuf said); Tim McDonald, another "Down Goes Frazier" tackler; and Roger Craig, perhaps the greatest running back in franchise history and the first player to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season, All-Pro 1988, four Pro Bowl nods and three Super Bowl rings. And don't forget "Nasty?" Did we find a Jeremy Newberry for the offensive line? We need us some "NASTY."

It will be time to check the merchandise soon! A new speed merchant, perhaps? Danny Gray?

Game 6 Klay
Klay Thompson has a special relationship with Game 6s in the playoffs. He has scored at least 25 points in six of the past seven Game 6s he has played in. In Friday night's Game 6, the W's eliminated Memphis and Klay showed the world why he earned that nickname
as he poured in 30 points on 8 of 14 from deep in a dynamic and dramatic performance.

Honoring our 2022 Bat Girl

Alongside MLB and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, we continue to go to bat against breast cancer by raising awareness and support through the annual Honorary Bat Girl program. Join us in shining a light on our 2022 A's Honorary Bat Girl, Tina Ramirez.

After going in for her regular mammogram in 2010, Tina's doctors found a small mass in each breast – one being malignant. After consulting with her medical team, family, friends, and some deep soul searching, Tina opted for a double mastectomy with reconstruction, hormone therapy and chemotherapy.

Tina has tackled most things in life with humor and openly shares her feelings with those in her life. Although she was scared, she was able to march forward while keeping a positive attitude. Cancer is a scary word and in the midst of things she found trust in her medical team and embraced the constant support from her loved ones when they were there to help lift her chin, wipe her tears, and get her back into warrior mode.

Looking for Mr. Mojo, Part III
by Howard Perlstein

Well ok, I may be stretching a metaphysical metaphor really far but not too far, just until it resembles the wonderful hero of Jack Cole’s Pre- D.C. Plasticman comics of the 1940s and 50s, who could stretch forever but also mold himself into whatever shape the moment demanded, whether it was a fire plug or a phone booth or an area rug, whatever he needed to win the moment.

Last time I mentioned what it took to being graced by Mr. Mojo, also known as El Senor to native people of the southwestern American desert, who sometimes appears in post-peyote ritual and embodies the magic of the green growing plant world.

I mentioned a friend who discussed the bitter taste of the peyote and how that bitterness made a person humble enough to be open to the magic – he said: “A man has got to have NO PRIDE to eat that stuff.”

Well, in Game 5 against the Grizzlies, the Dubs tasted a healthy amount of bitterness – a loss humiliating enough to destroy any prideful ways. And it seemed to work -- the quote I read from Klay Thompson made that clear with empathetic words to the effect of: “This must be how other teams feel when they play us.”

Embarrassed, with a need to prove something, even though they had already proven it over and over again, that the Dubs are a true championship team. Needed to prove it again. And maybe like Plasticman, molded themselves -- their offense and defense -- into a different shape, one that worked better. And like Plasticman, still a lot more fun than the other superheroes.

Game 6 was neck and neck and as brutal as bare-knuckle prize fighting for almost all of the game, and in my mind, I saw Mr. Mojo and El Senor both sitting courtside, and looking at each other in the fourth quarter and saying: “Yeah – they got the message. They’re ready.”

And showed their true identity, that they are still/again a genuine championship team. That win or lose, they belong right here where they are – in the playoffs for the championship. Which, given a season in which the Trifecta -- Curry, Thompson, Green -- didn’t get to play together and the newbies and rookies didn’t get to learn how it was going to be, that’s really something.

Patrick Marleau -- San Jose Sharks
Patrick Marleau retired from the NHL on May 10 after 23 seasons. The 42-year-old forward last played in 2020-21, scoring nine points (four goals, five assists) in 56 games with the San Jose Sharks. Marleau played 21 seasons for the Sharks and was their leader in games played (1,607), goals (522) and points (1,111), and second in assists (589) behind Joe Thorton (804). He said he hadn't made the final decision to retire until very recently.

"Probably just a couple of weeks ago," Marleau said. "I think I knew I was going to retire a long time ago. But I finally built up enough courage to get up here and speak. And now it's my retirement."

TWO - TWO - TWO Nixons in One!
"Stormin" Norm Nixon

"Stormin" Norm Nixon was a two-time NBA All-Star. Nixon won two NBA championships with the LA Lakers in 1980 and 1982, at the beginning of their Showtime era. Nixon was born on October 11, 1955 in Macon, Georgia. From 1984-89 he was with the Clippers. Nixon has been married to actress/producer/director/dancer Debbie Allen since 1984.
I grabbed this autograph at a Warriors game in 1988, which I covered for 5th Avenue magazine in Marin County. Why snag Norm's ink? Simple: I knew Norm and I each celebrated our birthdays on that glorious day, October 11! I omitted that fact as I watched him sign, then watched his face light up when I informed him of this remarkable "coincidence." Other great athletes in the October 11th club? Steve Young and, in the spirit of diversity and inclusion, Eleanor Roosevelt.

Am I the only person on the planet who can honestly claim to have met both RICHARD and NORM NIXON? Richard at Toots Shor's in NYC, and Norm at a Warriors game in Oakland. Both gregarious, friendly gentlemen.
Candlestick Park -- Opening Day -- April 12, 1960

The historic opener at Candlestick Park attracted 42,269 fans, including Vice President Richard Nixon, who threw out the first pitch. Giants pitcher Sam Jones threw a 3-hitter and Willie Mays started a 16-game hitting streak, in a 3-1 victory.

That looks like Governor Pat Brown on the right, who whupped Nixon in 1962 after which Nixon said: "You won't have Nixon to kick around, anymore." With respective wives.

Tell it Goodbye is the caption, part of the Tell It Goodbye pin series. The commemorative pin gives the 40-year history of Candlestick Park until the curtain fell on the Grand Old Lady on September 30, 1999.

Shabazz Set to Return for Final Season

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After a successful four years on the Hilltop, Khalil Shabazz has elected to utilize his final year of eligibility as the two-time All-WCC guard will return to USF this upcoming season to cap off his career as a Don.

"Khalil embodies what being a USF Don is all about," said head coach Chris Gerlufsen. "He's poured his blood, sweat and tears into our basketball program and the USF community and has impacted winning on a daily basis. He represents everything that is good about college basketball and I couldn't be happier about having the opportunity to coach him for one more year!"

Building on his success each year on the Hilltop, Shabazz enjoyed a stellar year on the hardwood in 2021-22 as the Seattle native finished second in the WCC in total steals (55) and steals per game (1.8) while also ranking fifth in made three-pointers (68). Shooting efficiently when on the floor, Shabazz also finished seventh in the conference in free-throw percentage (84.6) and twelfth in made field goals (140). Set to graduate with his communications degree in a few weeks, Shabazz also ranks amongst the program's all-time greats as he is currently third all-time in three-pointers made (193) and three-pointers attempted (558) as well as fourth all-time in total steals (159). Rewarded for his efforts, Shabazz was named to the 2021-22 All-WCC Second Team.

Off the court, Shabazz was recently selected as one of twelve members for the 20th Annual Division I-AAA-ADA Scholar-Athlete Team. Each nominee is required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games listed on the nomination form. To be eligible for nomination to the Scholar-Athlete Team, individuals must have reached junior academic standing at their respective institution.

In October 2020, the NCAA Division I Council extended eligibility and granted an additional season of competition for winter sport student-athletes.

Bay to Breakers
May 15, 2022
Bay to Breakers is an annual San Francisco footrace, typically on the third Sunday of May. The phrase "Bay to Breakers" reflects that the race starts at the northeast end of the downtown (adjacent to San Francisco Bay) and runs west through the city to finish at the Great Highway at Ocean Beach. The complete course is 7.46 miles (12.01 km) long and was started as a way to lift the city's spirits after the disastrous 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Photo by Rich Yee.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO
 On the result:
“First of all, one point on the road is a point. It’s something positive that we can bring home. In relation to the game, I think you’re right. We created three goals in transition. We were talking about that at halftime that we had to be more aggressive once we recovered the ball to go forward but without losing our composure.”

On Jeremy Ebobisse’s performance as the league co-leader in goals:
“I think that Jeremy [Ebobisse] is a player that tries to help us in build-up, trying to arrive to the box, he has very good feet, he has goals. Today, he helped us a lot. He helped us a lot today, and every game that he plays for us, offensively and defensively. Obviously when you are a striker, a nine, you have to be in those spaces. Sometimes the ball arrives, sometimes not. Jeremy has been good. I’m so happy for him.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD JEREMY EBOBISSE
On the match:
“I thought it was a difficult match. Anytime you go away from home, you know you’re going to be in for a battle. We did a solid job to keep the game 0-0 for as long as we did. Obviously, that’s something we struggled with a bit at times early on in the year. We’re really solidifying that part of our game. And then the reaction to going down was excellent. As a team, we need to figure out how to manage games from advantageous positions, being up 2-1 and ultimately being up 3-2. We need to find a way to close games out. We know it’s never going to be easy on the road, but ultimately the type of team that we want to be and where we want to be competing at the end of the season, these are the type of results that we hope will go our way in the future with the work that we put in.”

On co-leading MLS with seven goals:
“The team achievements come first. The goals today were useful for a tie, but ultimately I want to win. I’ve been to an MLS Cup before. Unfortunately it didn’t go my team’s way and ever since, that’s been the plan, to get back there. If my goals help get us there, then I’ll be super grateful and grateful to the rest of the team who are providing the service for those goals. However we can get to the playoffs and make a run, I’m happy to play my role.”

Roots Score First but Settle for Draw

Oakland Roots were on the front foot early. The pressure from the start was rewarded inside of three minutes when Óttar Magnús Karlsson found the back of the net to give Oakland the 1-0 lead. Las Vegas Lights were able to quickly find their feet and settle following the start and found the equalizer in the 24th minute through Alex Lara on a set piece. The half would end 1-1 with Las Vegas on the attack late in the half.

Roots once again came out of the locker controlling the match inside the Las Vegas half for the first 30 minutes. The best chance in that spell came from a shot off the post from Charlie Dennis. Coach Juan Guerra made some attacking substitutions as Roots continued to push for the winner. Despite the second half possession the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Oakland now returns home to host LA Galaxy II next Saturday, May 21st at Laney College.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
65th Anniversary Laguna Legends: 1970s

MONTEREY, Calif., May 11, 2022 – As WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca celebrates its 65th racing season, we take a look back at some of the legendary characters who helped mold the mystique of the now world-renowned race track.

The 1970s saw an explosion of horsepower burst onto the Laguna Seca circuit. The decade saw many big-time races take place at the track, and one of the men at the forefront of any race he competed in was George Follmer.

Follmer competed in nearly every racing organization, including Formula One, NASCAR, INDYCAR, 24 Hours of Le Mans, Trans-Am, IMSA and Can-Am.

In 1972, Follmer became the first and only driver ever to win both the Trans-Am and Can-Am championships in the same year. His first Can-Am race that year came about when Mark Donohue was injured, and Roger Penske called upon Follmer as a temporary replacement to drive Penske’s Porsche 917/10. He went on to dominate the 1972 season by winning nine of 14 races.

Follmer clinched the Can-Am Series championship at the Monterey Grand Prix at Laguna Seca on Oct. 15, 1972 at an impressive average speed of 108.79 mph on the tight 1.9-mile circuit.

“I loved driving at Laguna Seca, and clinching the Can-Am championship there made me love it even more,” Follmer recalled later in his career. “That was a very significant moment in my racing career, especially when I started the season without a ride.”

Follmer continued his decade of dominance when he won the 1978 Monterey Triple Crown race of the IMSA GT Championship series. Behind the wheel of a Porsche 935, Follmer proved that regardless of the ride, he was a Laguna Seca legend.

“I liked the old track layout best because it was a true test of a driver to be able to hold your foot down around there,” Follmer said in reference to the original 9-turn configuration that had a high-speed sweeper that extended from present-day turn 2 to turn 5. “It was a real challenge to go fast there and not everyone could do it. I won Can-Am, Trans-Am and IMSA races there and that place will always be one of my favorites.”

Everything came full circle for Follmer at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in 2021, when he and friend/racing rival Parnelli Jones were honored as the grand marshals for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion that was featuring the 55th anniversary of Ford in Trans-Am.
As Follmer was making his mark on four wheels at Laguna Seca in the 1970s, “King” Kenny Roberts was doing the same on two wheels.

Roberts, a native of Modesto, Calif., made himself right at home in Monterey. He won the 1974 and 1975 Monterey Superbike International races at Laguna Seca, with the 1975 victory helping to propel him to his second consecutive AMA Grand National championship.

Known for his fearless style, Roberts became a fan favorite – not just in the United States, but around the world.

By the time Roberts took the final checkered flag of his career – in 1984 at Laguna Seca – he had amassed an incredible résumé that included seven wins at Laguna Seca, three world championships, two national championships, 32 AMA National wins and 24 Grand Prix wins.

He is a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

You can see what it looked like to take a lap with Roberts around the original circuit carved into the former Fort Ord property here.

While Roberts was just getting his legendary career started in the mid 1970s, there was another event at Laguna Seca debuting – one that would become a legendary, world-renowned gathering.

You know it now as the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, but in 1974 when Steve Earle organized the first version, it was called the Monterey Historic Automobile Races.

While the modern Reunion typically features 400-500 cars, the first gathering in 1974 attracted just 66 entrants. However, AutoWeek gave the event enough pre-event publicity to legitimize it and draw a respectable crowd. It was then that Earle decided to return in 1975 – and the rest is history.

In 2017, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion won the FIA Founding Members’ Heritage Cup for Motorsport Event of the Year, the first event at an American venue to receive the prestigious award.

This August, the Rolex Reunion will kick-off a yearlong celebration leading to the 2023 centennial of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s most prestigious endurance race. As part of the tribute, visitors will be treated to the largest gathering of authentic Le Mans-winning and raced cars ever assembled in America.

Sonoma Raceway
Doordash Named Title Sponsor of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race at Sonoma Raceway
SONOMA, Calif. (May 9, 2022) – DoorDash, the local commerce platform, has been named title sponsor of the June 11th NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Sonoma Raceway.

The DoorDash 250 will serve as the 12th race on the Truck Series schedule and host the return of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to Northern California for the first time since 1998. This event will be part of a triple header weekend that includes the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series race and General Tire 200 ARCA Menards Series West event. This will mark the first time DoorDash has sponsored a NASCAR premier series race since entering the sport in 2020.

"We are excited to welcome DoorDash to our NASCAR race weekend and the
return of the Camping World Truck series to Sonoma," said Sonoma Raceway EVP and General Manager Jill Gregory. "It's always exciting to have a new partner involved, especially a local partner like DoorDash who has made a big impact on our sport and our community."

DoorDash first entered the world of motorsports in 2020 through a partnership with NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace and a founding partnership with 23XI Racing. In 2021, DoorDash expanded its engagement and connection to fans through a multi-year partnership with NASCAR, aiming to bring unique experiences to the track and create a more inclusive environment for racing fans everywhere. The wide-ranging agreement spans the sanctioning body and its 11 NASCAR-owned facilities.

DoorDash will look to deepen its connection with race fans by bringing the DoorDash experience to Sonoma Raceway over the coming years by highlighting local and regional favorites.

“We’re thrilled to welcome fans as the title sponsor of the NASCAR Camping World truck series race at Sonoma Raceway,” said Vanessa Carr, DoorDash’s Director of Partnership Marketing. “We look forward to connecting with the racing community both on and off the track to showcase DoorDash as an essential part of race day while bringing exciting, authentic experiences to fans.”

The green flag drops on the DoorDash 250 at Sonoma Raceway at 4:30 p.m. Pacific on Saturday, June 11. It will be preceded by the annual return of the ARCA Menards Series West General Tire 200 at 11:30 a.m. The weekend will conclude with the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series event on Sunday, June 12 at 1 p.m.

Tickets to the event are still available, starting at just $40. In addition, kids 12 and under are admitted FREE. For more information, visit the Sonoma Raceway website or call 800-870-7223.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
